In 2003, Cindy Munroe founded the company in her basement in Chattanooga, Tennessee with the financial support of family and originally two employees.
In 2008, Thirty-One relocated to Johnston in Ohio.
Munroe, who is also the CEO, has grown her company from the humble beginnings now to over 1000 employees and over 63000 independent sales consultants in the US and Canada.

The Thirty-One Product Range
Thirty-One has a wide range of products starting from tote bags, backpacks, travel accessories, to wallets, pillows, and a variety of gift items for him and her.
In 2014, Thirty-One acquired the jewelry company JewelKade and since then has also been offering customizable jewelry pieces.

One of the companies best selling pieces is the large utility tote that comes in different attractive designs.
I think one of the most exciting products that Thirty-One offers are the customizable items like totes, jewelry, pillows, and wall art (just to name a few).
You can personalize them to suit your taste and style.
The quality seems to be high, and the prices are generally affordable.
Thirty-One offers lots of hostess rewards for keen customers who want to earn product credits, and half priced items as a 'Thank You' for opening their homes for a presentation.
How To Join Thirty-One
The joining process is very similar to other direct selling companies. You will need to fill in a form with your personal details, and you need to choose one of two starter kits.
The Signature kit is available for $99 or the Custom Signature kit for $130 which includes three items you can personalize.
I didn't find any details how many items are in each kit or if there are also business tools come with it.
The new consultant will get access to a personalized website which costs $16.95 a month plus the company sends out branded email to your customers.
Let's talk about the commission plan.
The Thirty-One Compensation Plan
Thirty-One features an easy to read and to understand unilevel compensation plan.
They call it the 'Career Path' which can take you from a Consultant to Senior Consultant, Director, Senior Director, Executive Director, to the highest position of a Senior Executive Director.
The base commission is 25% plus any overrides on personal recruits.
I was surprised to learn that consultants don't get higher sales commissions based on high sales volumes which could essentially be a great incentive.
As you can see on the above screenshot, only people in the Director position and above will get a sales bonus starting at 3% and more, depending on your rank.

To be an active consultant, you will need to have $200 PV in a rolling three months period.
The Thirty-One 'All My Perks' Reward Program
The 'All My Perks' reward program is an addition to the compensation plan.
As part of it, consultants get 40% off on products they want to buy.
In the first few month, new consultants also get rewards for achieving certain milestones like achieving personal sales volume or recruiting new people into the company.
These perks are also available for long term consultants which can be a great way to keep the motivation up when the 'going gets tough.'
Can You Make Money With Thirty-One?
Kudos to Thirty-One to be transparent about their income disclosure which is available on the company's website.
All these numbers you can see above don't take any business related expenses into account or any tax payments.
The income disclosure reflects the annual income for active consultants for the year 2018.
As you can see, the majority of consultants earned less than $1000 a year in annual income. That is not much when you break it down to a monthly income or side hustle, especially when still other expenses need to be paid.
Consultants who are able to recruit lots of people and are able to keep them in their team will probably make quite a good income.
Doing a party plan business requires a lot of hard work including traveling, customer service like hostess coaching, follow-up phone calls, emailing and the likes.
So, it may not be worth your time and effort.

Overall, Thirty-One seems to be a credible direct selling company with strong leadership and a great product range.
It is a solid company with 15 years of experience in the party plan business.
The joining fee is reasonable with other perks available for consultants including a 40% discount on products.
In saying that, the commission payment of 25% is not very high and the monthly subscription fee of $16.95 quickly adds up with other business related costs.
The income disclosure provides a good picture of the earning potential which is very similar to other direct selling companies.
It basically means that the majority of consultants earn very little and just a small percentage of consultants have a good income.
Unless, you have some experience with direct selling and don't mind doing lots of presentations/parties, it can be a tough gig for newbies.
